a combination of 3D and photography. I didn't model the plane though - that was a lightwave preset model, as were the textures. However, I matched the perspective, lighting and colours to match the photo. I've been planning to do this kind of thing for ages, so I'm figuring out my own techniques for this work. I'm pretty happy with the result. Enjoy.
1. Propellers would be nice. Even if you have to do them in Photoshop, it would add a lot of realism.
2. Great job on matching the lighting and angle, but the cockpit canopy looks like it might be a bit too bright. You may want to try having some of the clouds reflected in it (maybe at a low opacity setting?).
3. Motion blur, if you could pull it off. I don't know much about Lightwave, but I would assume it should have some rudimentary motion blur, should it not? Even just a touch of blurring in Photoshop would really bring it to life.
4. I think if you add just a tiny bit of noise it would make it seem more real.
5. The specular highlight on the nose cone might look better if it were tinted slightly with that greenish sky colour.
6. If you really want to make something dramatic out of this, you could paint some bullet holes in the fusellage and have some more bullets flying past it, as though this plane were in a dogfight.
This is a great start, though. Nice type and a very strong, graphical layout.
Yeah...propellor... not much of a plane without one of those
It was actually a Lightwave preset model (so were the textures). I've done a fair bit of modelling, but nothing anywhere near as complex as this. Even if I were capable of modelling like that, my hardware wouldn't let me. Due to RAM issues, and the fact that I'm running a really old version of Lightwave (in OS X classic mode), 800x600 was the largest I was able to render the plane.
Lightwave is capable of motion blur, but I haven't used it that much. I'm guessing that it would show the blur in the alpha channel...
I originally had several other planes in the image, but they didn't line up as well as this one. My original intent was to have them as a stunt group, but that didn't work out. I haven't had much experience with this kind of compositing or editing before, but I guess it's an OK start.
Given a bit of time (and perhaps an upgrade of software) I'd love to give it another shot.
It took a fair bit of work actually - more than I first expected. But it was still good fun. Just wish I had a newer version of lightwave so I could do more adventurous stuff.
